Why NZ businesses are suddenly buying Google Ads.

We analysed twelve months of Google Keyword Planner data for New Zealand and Australia, September 2025 to August 2026, across more than 60,000 marketing and business search terms. Most of the category is falling. One line goes vertical.

Why NZ businesses are suddenly buying Google Ads.

The line that goes vertical

For most of the measured year, New Zealanders searched pay per click advertising 20 to 50 times a month. In June 2026 it jumped to 480. July, 720. August, 720 again. Year on year that is growth in the thousands of percent, and it is not travelling alone: searches for google ads agency rose 86% over the same period. Australia shows the identical shape a size larger, from a few hundred searches a month to 2,400, 2,900 and 4,400 across the same three months.

When a search term sits flat for years and then triples twice in one quarter, something structural has moved.

What’s falling around it

The same twelve months, New Zealand, year on year:

  • seo consultant · down 81%

  • digital marketing consultant · down 78%

  • social media management · down 78%

  • online marketing · down 71%

  • digital marketing services · down 67%

  • local seo · down 64%

  • social media marketing · down 61%

  • digital marketing agency · down 56%

  • marketing strategy · down 47%

  • search engine optimisation · down 32%

The done-for-you marketing category lost between half and four fifths of its search volume in a single year. The need did not vanish. Businesses still have to be found, still have to convert, still have to grow. The question moved.

Where the searches went

Two places.

The first is AI. BrightLocal’s consumer research found ChatGPT use for local business recommendations went from 6% to 45% of consumers in a year, and a 2026 multi-source analysis found 73% of B2B buyers now use AI tools in purchase research. In the same NZ dataset where everything traditional fell, searches for aeo (answer engine optimisation) grew 52%. And our own client analytics, shared with permission, show what those visitors are worth: people arriving from AI assistants engage at 84% against 75% for organic search and convert at 5.4% against 3.9%, and one client’s AI-referred visitors enquire at three times the rate of its organic traffic. People have stopped asking Google about marketing and started asking AI for the answer.

The second is paid. As AI answers absorb clicks that used to reach websites, organic visibility shrinks, and owners respond the rational way: they buy certainty. That is the vertical line. Google Ads demand is rising because organic attention is getting harder to earn, not because ads suddenly got better.

What rising demand does to the auction

Google Ads is an auction. More bidders chasing the same searches means higher cost per click, and you cannot control who else turns up. The only lever that is fully yours is what happens after the click.

Our own numbers show how much that lever is worth. En Beauty’s cost per acquisition fell from NZD $70.70 at launch to $47.52, not through cleverer bidding but because the site converts at 6% against a 2% industry average. Strong conversion feeds Google’s Smart Bidding better data, better data lowers cost, and the advantage compounds. In a crowding auction, the conversion layer is the moat.

What to do with this

Four moves, in order.

Fix conversion before you buy clicks. Ads pointed at a site that does not convert fund everyone’s auction except yours. What conversion rate optimisation actually involves →

If you run ads, run them on evidence: keywords from real NZ search data, search terms reviewed every few days, negatives maintained, and a landing page that answers the exact search. How Kyttn runs Google Ads →

FAQ

Why are Google Ads getting more expensive in NZ?
Because demand for paid search is rising while organic visibility shrinks, so more businesses are bidding in the same auctions. Cost per click follows bidder count. The defence is not cleverer bidding, it is a site that converts more of every click you pay for.

Should I move my SEO budget into Google Ads?
Not wholesale. The searches that remain in Google carry high intent, and AI engines assemble their answers from search-readable pages, so organic work now feeds two channels at once. The right split is a data question for your specific market, not a fashion decision.

Is SEO dead, then?
No, it transformed. The rankings still matter and the same foundation now powers AI citations, which is where a growing share of buyers make their shortlist. Is SEO dead? The data, honestly →
